Typical Sump Pump
Sump pumps play an important role in managing water around your house/building. A typical sump pump has water drained into to it from french drains, downspouts, and other water sources. The sump pump system is comprised of a rigid plastic barrel , generally 18″ to 24″ wide and 20″ to 30″ deep. The sump pump barrel is located at a low point in the area being drained so water can flow in to it. An electric sump pump is then placed at the bottom of the sump barrel. When water flows into the barrel, the sump pump is activated by a float switch which is triggered when the water gets to a certain level. When the pump is activated, it evacuates the water in barrel through the discharge pipe. Water is typically discharged to a drainage bed, the sewer, or on to public drainage areas ( the street) . The goal is to move the water away from the areas its causing damage and is not wanted.
Sump pumps must have GFI dedicated outlets to be safe and are required by national building codes. Selecting the proper pump, drainage system, and installing proper electrical outlets is crucial for a professional installation.
